How to Move With Your Pet – A Complete Guide

Moving with a pet adds a layer of planning that most checklists skip entirely. Dogs and cats experience relocation as a genuine disruption – new smells, new sounds, a truck full of strangers carrying away their familiar furniture. This guide covers how to plan a pet-friendly move, both within Ranchi and for longer intercity relocations.

Note upfront: professional movers transport goods, not live animals. Your pet should always travel with you personally – by car, train or flight – never in the moving truck. This guide is about planning around that fact, not working around it.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

Vet visit and records

Get an updated health certificate and vaccination record, especially for intercity moves. Some states and housing societies ask for proof of rabies vaccination before allowing a pet on the premises. Carry a physical copy plus a phone photo.

Microchip and ID tag update

If your pet is microchipped, update the registered address as soon as you have one. Update the phone number and address on the physical ID tag too – this is the detail people forget most often.

Research the new area

Locate the nearest vet clinic in your new neighbourhood before you arrive, not after an emergency. Check if your new housing society has any pet restrictions – some Ranchi apartment complexes have breed or size rules worth confirming in advance.

1 Week Before

Maintain routine as long as possible

Pets pick up on change quickly – packed boxes and disappearing furniture are stress signals. Keep feeding times, walk times and sleeping arrangements as normal as possible right up until moving day. Pack your pet’s room last, if you can.

Prepare a travel kit

The single best thing you can do: put your pet in one closed room – with water, their bed and a favourite toy – away from the door the crew uses to move boxes. A moving day with strangers walking in and out repeatedly is disorienting and can trigger a bolt-and-hide response, especially in cats.

Intercity Moves With Pets

By road

If you are driving to your new city (alongside a vehicle you are not transporting yourself, or in a second car), plan stops every 2–3 hours for water and a short walk. Carry a secured travel crate for smaller pets or a seatbelt harness for dogs riding in the back seat.

By train

Indian Railways allows pets in certain classes with advance booking and a health certificate – check current rules on the IRCTC site before booking, since requirements do change.

By flight

Most Indian airlines require advance notice, a valid health certificate, and either cabin or cargo booking depending on pet size. Book this the moment your travel date is fixed – pet slots are limited per flight.

Set up familiar items first
