The 10 mistakes we see repeatedly on Ranchi moves – late booking, verbal quotes, packing valuables in the truck. All avoidable in minutes.
After 5,000+ moves, we see the same handful of mistakes repeat themselves. Almost all are avoidable with 10 minutes of foresight. This is the honest list – the mistakes we watch first-time customers make so you do not have to.
Waiting until 3–4 days before your target date to book. In peak season (April–June, month-ends) the best crews and vehicles are already gone, forcing you into a suboptimal slot or a higher price. Book 15–20 days in advance for the best quote and slot.
A verbal quote is not binding. On moving day the price changes and you have no leverage. Always insist on a written itemised quote before signing. See our how to choose a mover guide for the full question list.
Phone-only quotes are guesses. The mover has no idea whether your "2BHK" has 20 cartons or 60. Accurate quotes require a survey – phone, video or in person.
Packing everything you own, including items you have not used in years. You pay for volume, so moving items you will discard at the new address wastes money. Sort into keep/donate/discard before the mover arrives.
Jewellery, cash, original documents and heirlooms should travel with you personally, not in the moving truck. This is standard industry practice, not a trust issue.
Bank, mobile, gas connection, Aadhaar, driving licence, LIC, employer HR, children’s school. Update all of them a week before your move. Bills going to the wrong address is a slow-motion problem.
Everything packed, nothing accessible. First night at the new address becomes a scavenger hunt for phone chargers, toothbrushes and medication. Pack an essentials bag that travels with you – 3 days of clothes, toiletries, chargers, meds, basic kitchen.
Reconnecting the TV, sound system and computer at the new address becomes a puzzle. A 30-second phone photo of the back of each device saves an hour of trial and error. Covered in detail in our electronics packing guide.
Aggregators subcontract your job. The company that comes to pack is not the company you booked with. Insist on knowing which specific company will do the work and evaluate them directly.
Signing the delivery paperwork without walking through the inventory. If something is missing or damaged, you cannot claim it after signing. Take the 10 minutes to check every major item against the packing list before signing.
Team lead tip: If you can only avoid one mistake on this list, avoid Mistake 10. The delivery-day check is your last window to raise anything.
A fridge not defrosted 24 hours ahead arrives wet and smelly. Turn it off, empty it and leave doors open the day before.
New high-rises on Ratu Road, Booty and Kanke often need lift-bookings 24 hours ahead. Skipping this delays the whole move.
Ranchi’s July-August rain will soak an unwrapped mattress in minutes. Waterproof lamination is standard – make sure it is included.
If your employer is reimbursing the move, read their policy before booking. Caps, required documents and approved-vendor lists change your choice. See our transfer reimbursement guide.
Choose a real mover with a physical office, get a written quote after a survey, and follow a checklist. That covers 80% of the risk. Our home shifting checklist gives the 6-week timeline; this guide is the mistakes-to-avoid companion piece.
