How to Pack Your Kitchen for Moving Day

The kitchen is the room that breaks most often during a move. Crockery chips, glass shatters, spices spill, and the mixer somehow arrives with a bent rotor. All of these are packing problems, not transit problems, and this guide is the exact sequence our Ranchi crews use to pack kitchens without loss.

Before you start, clear the counter, empty the sink and lay out your packing material: double-wall corrugated cartons in three sizes, bubble wrap, foam sheets, packing paper, stretch film and a marker pen. All of these are included in a professional Ranchi packing service quote, but if you are packing yourself, the same material list applies.

Sort First, Pack Second

Empty every cabinet and every drawer onto the dining table or floor. Separate into three groups: keep and pack, use in the next week, and discard or donate. Expired spices, chipped mugs, plastic containers with no lid, duplicate ladles – all go. You will save carton space and unpacking time at the new home.

Crockery and Glassware – The 4-Layer Method

Layer 1: Foam base

Cut a piece of foam sheet or crumpled packing paper to line the bottom of the carton, about 3 cm thick. This absorbs shock during loading and unloading.

Layer 2: Paper wrap each piece

Wrap every plate, bowl, cup and glass individually in packing paper. Do not use newspaper for anything you will eat off – the ink transfers. Plain packing paper or butcher paper is standard.

Layer 3: Bubble wrap for stemware

Wine glasses, tall vases and mixer jars get an outer layer of bubble wrap after the paper. Tape the wrap closed so it does not unravel.

Layer 4: Pack vertically, not stacked

Plates stand on their edge (like books on a shelf), not stacked flat. Vertical packing distributes pressure along the strong edge instead of concentrating it on the centre. Fill any gaps with crumpled paper so nothing shifts.

Coordinator note: Never mix heavy items and fragile items in the same carton. A cast iron tawa on top of teacups will crack them even with perfect packing.

Appliances – The Right Order

Refrigerator

Empty and defrost 24 hours before packing. Wipe dry, tape the door closed with painters tape (not duct tape – it leaves residue on paint), and wrap the whole unit in stretch film. Fridges travel upright, never on their side, because compressor oil can leak into the cooling coils.

Microwave and mixer

Remove glass turntables, wrap them separately in bubble wrap, and place in a padded carton with the microwave. Mixer jars go in a bubble-wrapped bundle with the base motor unit.

Gas stove

Disconnect the gas pipe (call the gas agency if you are not confident), remove burner rings and grates, wrap them individually, and pack the stove in a padded carton. Never move a gas stove with the cylinder attached.

Cookware and Utensils

Pots, pans and steel utensils are the least fragile kitchen items. Nest them (small inside large), separate each layer with a sheet of packing paper to prevent scratching, and pack in a medium carton. Do not overfill – kitchen cartons over 15 kg are painful to lift and more likely to fail at the bottom.

Dry Goods, Spices and Groceries

Sealed packages

Unopened flour, dal, rice, sugar and biscuit packets can travel as-is. Group them in a carton, label "KITCHEN – DRY GOODS" and mark FRAGILE if the carton also has glass bottles.

Open containers

Loose spices in steel dabbas leak. Two options: transfer to a zip-lock inside the dabba, or use a stretch-film wrap around the lid. For move distances beyond Ranchi – like a Ranchi to Delhi move – use the zip-lock method to prevent 4-day transit spills.

Perishables

Do not move fresh vegetables, milk, meat or eggs. Use them up in the week before the move or give to neighbours. If you must move perishables for a very short local shift, use a small insulated cooler that travels with you, not in the truck.

Labelling – The Step Most People Skip

Every carton needs three pieces of information on the top and one side: room name (KITCHEN), contents category (CROCKERY / APPLIANCES / DRY GOODS), and a FRAGILE flag if applicable. This lets the crew load fragile items on top and lets you unpack in priority order at the new address.
