10 Common Mistakes People Make When Hiring Packers in Ranchi – Surya Packers and Movers Ranchi

Every week our Ranchi office gets calls from families who booked with a cheaper packer, had a bad experience, and are now trying to salvage what is left. The mistakes are almost always the same handful. This guide lists the ten most common ones we see and how you can avoid them, whether you eventually book with us or with another Ranchi mover. Before we start, if you want a straight comparison, see our Ranchi service page for what a complete quote should look like.

Mistake 1: Choosing the Cheapest Quote

The lowest quote is almost never the best value. When one mover quotes ₹6,000 for a 2BHK local shift and another quotes ₹12,000, it is very unlikely the cheaper mover is just more efficient. Usually something is missing – packing material, insurance, GST invoice, or a full-sized crew. Compare quotes on scope, not just price. Our Ranchi pricing guide shows what a genuine market rate looks like.

Mistake 2: Not Doing a Physical or Video Survey

A quote given over phone based on “it is a 2BHK” is a guess. Volume varies 40 percent between similar-sized flats depending on how much furniture and belongings a family has accumulated. Insist on a video survey via WhatsApp or an in-person visit before accepting any quote. This is free from any professional mover.

Mistake 3: Ignoring GST Registration

If the mover cannot show a GST registration certificate and cannot issue a GST invoice, walk away. Your company will not reimburse a non-GST invoice. Also, non-GST movers are often unregistered businesses with no accountability if things go wrong.

Mistake 4: Paying Large Advances

A reasonable advance for a Ranchi mover is 10 to 25 percent, paid a day or two before the move. Anyone demanding 50 to 100 percent advance before packing day is showing a cash-flow problem that could become your problem. Pay the balance on delivery, not before dispatch from Ranchi.

Mistake 5: Not Getting the Quote in Writing

Verbal quotes disappear the moment there is a dispute. Insist on a written quote (email, WhatsApp text, or printed document) that itemises labour, packing material, transport, unloading, GST, and any extras. Save it. If moving-day charges deviate from the written quote without a clear reason, you have documented ground to push back.

Mistake 6: Booking National Aggregators Without Checking the Local Vendor

National aggregator apps often subcontract Ranchi moves to local vendors who bid low to win the job. You get the aggregator brand but the local vendor's actual crew. Ask specifically which local company will execute the move, verify their office address, and check their reviews separately. Most reputable Ranchi movers (including us) service directly and are easier to hold accountable.

Mistake 7: Skipping Transit Insurance for Intercity Moves

For any move above 300-500 km, transit insurance is cheap relative to the value it covers. A 1BHK household from Ranchi to Delhi or Mumbai can easily contain ₹3 to ₹5 lakh of goods. Basic transit cover at 0.5 to 1 percent of declared value is worth every rupee if anything goes wrong.

Mistake 8: Ignoring the Packing Material Quality

Cartons should be corrugated 5-ply, not thin single-wall boxes. Bubble wrap should have 10mm bubbles minimum. Wooden crates are needed for TVs above 32 inches, mirrors, marble items and large glass. If a mover uses old newspaper as padding and thin single-wall cartons, damage risk goes up sharply. See our packing materials guide for what quality actually looks like.

Mistake 9: Not Checking the Vehicle Match

Cost is priced against vehicle size. If you're quoted for a 14-foot LCV but the mover shows up with a 10-foot vehicle and asks you to pay for a second trip, that's a scam. Confirm vehicle type in writing before the truck arrives. A 1BHK usually fits a 14-foot Tata 407; a 2-3BHK needs 17-foot or 22-foot; a 4BHK or villa needs 22-foot or 32-foot container.

Mistake 10: Delaying the Booking Until Last Week

Peak season (April-June, October-December) and month-end weeks book out fast in Ranchi. Booking 2-3 weeks ahead gets you preferred dates and better pricing. Last-week bookings force you into whatever mover is still available, which is not always the best one. Also, sudden bookings mean rushed surveys, quotes given on assumptions, and higher risk of moving-day surprises.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Check GST registration certificate, visit their office, verify reviews on Google Business Profile, and confirm they are IBA-approved for corporate reimbursement claims.

Local Ranchi movers with real offices are typically more accountable than aggregator brands that subcontract. Verify the actual crew executing the move regardless.

20 percent is normal industry practice in Ranchi. 50 percent or more is a red flag suggesting the mover has cash flow issues.

With transit insurance, file a claim with photos and the LR. Without insurance, mover liability is capped by standard consignment terms and settlement is limited.

Included in most quotes. If quoted separately, expect ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 for a 2BHK using proper 5-ply cartons and bubble wrap.
